Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is a key component for personal growth and success. It is the ability to recognise your emotions and know your strengths. Becoming self-aware means to look inward and find out what is there that works for you. It is the process of understanding ourselves. The first step involves recognising the emotion that we are experiencing. Then, it involves understanding the feelings associated with that emotion. And finally, to understand what we think and do as a result. It has been observed that professional sports athletes get intensive training to help and recognise and control their emotions.

According to Daniel Goleman the competencies associated with self-awareness are:

  • Emotional self-awareness: recognizing your emotions and the impact they have on your life.
  • Accurate self-assessment: identifying your strengths and limitations.
  • Self-confidence: knowing your self-worth and capabilities.

The good news for us is that we can develop our awareness of self and our emotions. We need to spend more time and effort to recognise the areas that need to be developed and make a determined effort to strengthen those aspects in ourselves. Studies have shown how emotionally intelligent people plan to put time aside to build such awareness.
